Here is the new breakdown to clear upany confusion with the changes in USMC RECON and the new structure ofRECON stillexists! They have simply rearranged theForce RECON teams into MARSOC and the Battalion RECON missions havebeen largely unchanged. See the details at. But ina nutshell, all future RECON students must attend BRC – BASIC RECONCOURSE. You can still do this as a new Marine but you mustfirst qualify after Boot camp and School of Infantry (SOI).The link above will describe the standards that a RECON applicant mustadhere to before joining the Marine Occupational Specialty 0321 (RECONMarine).
RECON Battalions remained as part of the USMCDivisions and continue to perform missions for the deployed USMCcommander. BRC is open to Marines and Navy Hospital Corpsman. Here is a brief history of USMCRECON and MarSOC:I n recenthistory(1990s-2005), Recon Battalions were Division assetsand focused primarily on Amphibious/Ground Reconnaissance andSurveillance missions. This included both green side andurban R&S.Then you hadthe Force Recon Company, which was a completely separate unit that wasa Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) asset. They were primarilythe Close Quarter Batlle (CQB) platoon and had a deep reconnaissancemission set. In reality, as much as no one really wanted tosay it, Force was the senior unit. Guys would start off in BnRecon and then move over to Force (Not always, but that's the way itgenerally worked). Now enter MARSOC. In 2006, both 1st and 2nd Force ReconCompanies became MARSOC.
MARSOC was built on the backs of theRECON community and took many of the RECON operators. Sincethen, the attitude at MARSOC (At the senior Officer/Enlisted level) hasbecome one of animosity towards 0321's. So the ForceCompanies went away and weren't stood back up, in name, until like the2009/2010 timeframe. There was a lot of transition and name changing during that time.As of 2012:There are three Recon Battalions.- 1st Batt is in Camp Pendleton, CA.- 2nd Batt is in Camp Lejeune, NC.- 3rd Batt which is in Camp Schwab, Okinawa. The Battalion is broken down into three Companies (A, B, C) the ForceRecon Company, and a Headquarters and Support Company (H&S). Recon Battalion is controlled by their respective MarineDivision and support the Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU) with a ReconPlt. Additionally, the Battalion had been doing deploymentsfor the Division directly to support OEF and any other taskings fromthe Marine Division. The Force Recon Company supports the MEU's and is OperationallyControlled by the Marine Expeditionary Force (The Parent Command of theDivision). However, Force is still administrativelycontrolled by the Recon Battalion and pretty much still gets tasked bythe Division.Recruiting Programs for Enlisting into RECON:There is still the 0321 enlistment program.
